The Transfiguration Cathedral

The Transfiguration Cathedral

The Transfiguration Cathedral in St. - Petersburg, Russia.
The name of the cathedral is connected with the famous Prcobrazhcnsky Guards regiment that was quartered in this area in the early 1700s, next to the residences of the Tsar's family and close associates.
Thk elite Preobrazhensky, or Transfiguration, Regiment, was a favourite creation of Peter the Great, who had formed it back in 1687 from youngsters of his own age in Preobrazhenskoye,a suburb of Moscow.
Peter himself was the colonel of the regiment. After 17 October 1740, when Anna Ioannovna died and the throne passed to Ivan VI, the infant son of Duke Anton Ulrich of Brunswick-Lüneburg, the Guards took exception.
On 25 November 1741, following a prearranged plan, Peter I's daughter Elizabeth came to the grenadiers company of the Preobrazhensky Regiment and called on them to depose Ivan Antonovich. The young Emperor and his regent mother, Anna Leopoldovna, were arrested and Elizabeth took the throne. The regimental Church of the Transfiguration was built in 1743-54 on Elizabeth's orders, on the spot where the regimental HQ had stood.
The first cathedral, built by Mikhail Zemtsov, burnt down in 1825. In 1827-29 it was rebuilt to the design of Vasily Stasov, who made maximum use of the old walls and retained the general layout of the building. At that time the cathedral was enclosed behind iron railings, the pillars of which are cannon captured in the Russo-Turkish War of 1828.
